Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi & Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins - Friday evening
Family greed is on full display in these one-act operas directed by Pat Diamond, who returns to Yale Opera after leading its hilarious production of Le Comte Ory in 2023.
In The Seven Deadly Sins, Anna sets off to earn a fortune to appease her family. Facing temptation along the way, the practical Anna I (the singer) must keep the emotional Anna II (the dancer) in check. The Weill will be performed with a chamber ensemble and sung in German.
The Donati family gets more (or rather less) than they bargain for when they enlist rapscallion Gianni Schicchi to favorably rewrite the will of their newly deceased relative. Puccini’s lush music underscores both family squabbles and romantic moments in this beloved comedy. Performed with piano and sung in Italian.
